spotted this at the value village yesterday among so many other pieces of junky art we wanted to buy. sibling claimed it was one of her favourite ever poems too (freaky coincide-y days i’ve been experiencing lately).
apart from the olde timey look which i dig, i love that it also has that date that it’s wrongly associated with. which tells me that it was either created as a joke or that someone was truly that naive, both possibilities make me grin like a fool.

philip larkin was many things - no nonsense poet, progressive librarian, unexpected lothario, friend of kingsley amis (inspiration for lucky jim), and probably racist. but in writing this poem, he became the voice of this thought every person with a parent has had at some point in their miserable life.
maybe from a year ago when i apparently discovered rhyming and had this thing about “speed poetry”.
